Expressionist architecture has long been a source of inspiration for me. Many traditions of cathedral and temple architecture, from various world cultures, have also informed my work. Recently I’ve also become interested in ships and sea faring vessels; some real ones but mostly imagined. I’ve been struck by the examples I’ve seen in popular science fiction and fantasy films. For me these structures and vehicles embody spiritual transcendence and escapism, and I am interested in the relationships between them. I’ve been trying to explore these ideas through the lens of both abstract art and fiber craft. The fiber assemblage elements that comprise the surfaces serve as an interior dialogue between disparate parts of my own history and elements of shared cultural experience that have stuck with me over time.
